As I have written this series of posts championing the nonprofit sector, I am aware that in each area, nonprofits can improve their practice. Even as nonprofits are designed to avoid personal gain and promote community accountability, good governance can be undermined by tendencies to overrepresent donors and other people from privileged groups. Nonprofits are important employers, but most offer jobs without worker representation or adequate benefits. Some programs offer charity where social change and community organizing is needed. We need to delve into each of these areas to assess our vulnerabilities and see how we can improve. So, let’s continue to look critically at our own sector. But let’s also be proud of our collective impact and let our #nonprofitpride show. We can’t hire high-powered lobbyists to plead our case, so we’d better start doing it ourselves.
