OMB orders a pause on federal grants and loans
It's bad, but don't panic. Do contact your congressional reps.
Of course, folks are gravely concerned about the OMB memo issued yesterday pausing distribution of federal grants. The potential impact of this is massive, similar and perhaps much worse than a government shutdown domestically, and also catastrophic to aid recipients abroad. However, we don’t yet know whether this broad action will be amended or rescinded. The National Council of Nonprofits is among organizations seeking a Temporary Restraining Order against implementation of the policy.
You can and should take action. Nonprofit organizations are encouraged to sign on to this letter, and individuals can contact your congressional delegation immediately to express your outrage and concern (usually easiest to do via their websites). Here is a simple script:
Dear [Congressperson],
I’ve just heard about the OMB memo pausing federal grants and loans. I and my neighbors depend on nonprofit and public services that receive federal funding, and an abrupt and arbitrary disruption to their funding is unacceptable. I trust you will work hard to reinstate the funding and ensure that the federal government honors its commitments.
Sincerely,
[Your Name and Address]
Stay engaged, but also care for yourself and your immediate community. This will be a long haul.
PS – Glad to also see several Quaker organizations challenging the new policy enabling ICE to enter houses of worship.

Update: the order has now been rescinded, probably due to it being illegal. Good reminder not to get too worked up about things immediately and also to continue to speak out.
A federal judge has temporarily blocked implementation of the funding freeze pending review. Expect a roller coaster, but likely a much more narrow DEI focus for the freeze in future days or weeks.
