The new tax bill currently making its way through the House of Representatives has some concerning provisions, which are summarized here. There is a proposed provision that would allow the Trump administration to revoke the tax status of any nonprofit without any due process or basic protections. In addition, new taxes on nonprofits and foundations have been proposed, including a hefty tax on foundation endowments that would essentially transfer money from charitable foundation endowments to billionaires (as it would fund tax breaks to the wealthy).
In addition to their analysis of these proposals, the National Council of Nonprofits put out this messaging guide (which makes many of the same points I made in my series about the value of the nonprofit sector more concisely).
There is a lot of chaos going on right now, so it’s difficult to know what to act on. These issues are wonky, but it’s clear that the current administration does not respect or value the work of nonprofits, so we can’t afford to leave our fate in their hands. I’ll be writing to my Congresspeople (again) today. Please join me.
Great news: the provision allowing revocation of a nonprofit’s status without due process has been removed from the House tax bill. So glad to hear this.
