No social participation, few friends is the norm for Americans
New survey establishes baseline data about social connection
The first report is out from Social Connection in America, an ambitious effort to monitor social connection over the next 25 years. The news is not good. Many Americans feel isolated, have few close relationships (about 40% have two or fewer close relationships and five or fewer acquaintances!), and do not belong to clubs or volunteer. This has public health implications as connected people live longer, healthier lives. Young adults are much more lonely/disconnected, which is concerning for the future.
For nonprofit folks, the statistics regarding civic participation are of special interest. The two charts below show rates of “getting together with neighbors to do something positive” and “volunteering.” I like that this question is asked in several ways.

I love how it’s put “getting together with neighbours to so something positive”. So simple.
Interesting! I’ll check out this report
